Birds This Spring

bird in apple tree

I was thinking about doing a list of the birds I've seen or heard in my backyard so far this spring anyway, and just in time to make the list, the meadowlark showed up! Can you see it. Let's go in closer.

It, and two friends, flew in to this apple tree. I had to take the telephoto all the way out to improve on it.

Here is my backyard list for March, the good and the bad:

  • Starlings
  • Robins
  • Bluebirds
  • Red-wing blackbirds
  • Cardinal
  • Ovenbird

I am no birder but do enjoy watching them especially in our garden, some of our friends who are keen twitchers do keep lists for field and garden.
We get a lot of woodland birds and we also have a pair of peregrine falcons hanging about our nearest town, they are finally making a come back since the decline of the early 60s & 70s due to pesticides.

I have thought of doing the same, but it is so difficult to get decent pictures of them without good equipments.

What a nice variety you have visiting your back yard. I mainly just get robins and big black birds. I haven't seen the goldfinches in a couple years.

My list is much the same is yours only without the meadow lark. And what is an oven bird? I also have gull, boat-tail grackle and turkey buzzard. The finches are here year round.

I like the yellow belly on that bird. You've got a good list there for birds that close. I wish I had a list that long from just outside my house. I think I live in too much of an urban area for a big list. I get almost exclusively house sparrows and starlings, with a mourning dove every once in a while. Maybe I just need to keep paying attention throughout the year.

Carol- how cool about the falcons! They are being brought back here too, mostly in cities where they like to nest on ledges.

Thanks Rache- I think I'll decline, though

Rainfield- yes, good pictures are really tough. I can do better with this camera, but still not great.

Ann- I have a nice big rural backyard

Chuck- I should have all the others you mention soon. Actually, the gulls are here pretty much all the time, but it just happens that I don't think I've seen one here this month. The ovenbird is tough to see, but I bet you've heard one. They say "teacher, teacher, teacher" over and over.

Vanilla- my list is very slim compared to those who have more woods, or use feeders.

betchai! That is the time of day I like them the least. I don't want to be cheerful in the morning.

Ratty- I do live in the country, and it's nice.

I wish I knew all the sounds these birds make...I think you'll have to do a bird sound post for us one of these days, Shark!

The meadowlark is so pretty. We have hawks and crows out here as well.

Carmen- I'm not as good with birds as with plants. Real birders laugh at my lack of knowledge. I wonder if I could record some of them? I don't think I have a way to convert them to midi or wav files... have to think about that.

Jo- Yeah, most everybody has hawks and crows. But it's nice to see the hawks again. They were really scarce in the 70's and 80's
